Under the watchful eyes of two officers of a totalitarian government, an author is interrogated about the content of his gruesome stories, stories that mirror a string of actual child murders.
Dark and yet funny, emotionally trying and shocking.
This brutal dark comedy from Martin McDonagh, the master of the horror-comedy, poses unanswerable questions: Can stories hold the power to cause atrocities? Where is the line between truth and fairy tale? Is a life of horror worth living at all? Drawing on inspiration as diverse as Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Kafka, and Antonin Artaud.
The Pillowman is a dark, twisty, and utterly unforgettable masterpiece, with layered and damaged characters. It is a tale that twists in on itself so much that it might take multiple viewings to get much of the subtlety.
